Green screens: how to set one up, and when you don't need one

A green screen removes the background behind you so your camera becomes just you, floating over the gameplay. It's the single biggest visual difference between a stream that looks like a webcam in a bedroom and one that looks produced. It's also the effect most likely to look terrible if you rush it.
First: do you actually need one?
A green screen buys you screen space. Without one, your camera is an opaque rectangle covering part of the game. With one, you're a cut-out silhouette and the game stays visible. That's the whole benefit β and it's worth much more in some content than others.
- Worth it for anything where the game fills the screen and detail matters β shooters, racing, competitive play β and for full-body setups where you want to appear standing in the scene.
- Not worth it for Just Chatting, where you're the content and a real room behind you actually looks warmer than a floating head.
- Not yet if your lighting isn't sorted. A green screen makes bad lighting more visible, not less. Do lighting and camera setup first β it's a bigger quality jump and it costs less.
The free option: software background removal
Before you buy fabric, try doing it in software. Modern AI segmentation is good enough that a lot of streamers never buy a physical screen at all.
- The OBS Background Removal plugin runs a segmentation model locally and works on NVIDIA (CUDA), Apple Silicon, Intel and plain CPU. Install it from the plugin browser in OBS β never from a random download site.
- NVIDIA Broadcast does the same on RTX cards, as a separate app that presents a cleaned-up virtual camera to OBS.
- The honest limitation: AI removal is softer at the edges than real chroma key. Hair and glasses are where it shows, and fast movement can make the edge shimmer. In good light it's genuinely fine; in bad light it's a mess.
Setting up a physical screen
Chroma key works by removing one specific colour. Everything that makes it look bad comes from that colour not being uniform β a shadow, a crease, or a bright spot is a different green as far as the software is concerned, and it won't key out cleanly.
- Get it flat. Wrinkles cast tiny shadows and every one becomes a ragged edge. A collapsible pop-up screen stays taut by design; loose fabric needs steaming or hanging for a day.
- Stand well away from it. Two to three feet minimum. Too close and green light bounces off the screen onto your shoulders and hair β βgreen spillβ β which then keys out of you, eating your outline.
- Light the screen separately from yourself. This is the step people skip and it's the one that matters. Two lights on the screen, evenly, and a separate light on your face. One light doing both jobs gives you a hot spot in the middle and dark corners.
- Don't wear green. Obvious, and yet. Also avoid shiny fabrics that reflect the screen.
- Then add the filter. In OBS: right-click your camera source β Filters β + β Chroma Key. Start with the defaults and adjust Similarity upward only until the background just disappears. Overshooting eats your edges.
- Add Spill Reduction if your outline looks green-tinged, and nudge Smoothness slightly if the edge is jagged.
Cheaper ways to get the same result
- A plain matte wall. Chroma key works on any consistent colour, not just green. A flat, evenly-lit wall in a colour you're not wearing keys surprisingly well.
- Green fabric plus a curtain rod does the job for a fraction of a purpose-built screen, if you're willing to iron it.
- Skip the full-body screen. A screen that only covers the frame behind your head and shoulders is much smaller, cheaper and easier to light, and viewers see exactly the same thing.
Once it's keyed, put it into a proper layout β OBS scenes, alerts and overlays covers where the camera should sit and why. And check the full gear list if you're pricing out lights.
